The European Commission awards yearly 5 EU-funded projects which demonstrate excellence and new approaches in regional development with the objective of inspiring other regions and project managers across Europe.
In 2019, the REGIOSTARS focus on five themes deemed crucial for the future of EU regional policy:
- promoting digital transformation
- connecting the green, blue and grey
- combating inequalities and poverty
- building climate-resilient cities
- modernising health services

Raising awareness about mental health
Each year, almost 165 million people in the EU experience a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety. Mental illnesses are a considerable, growing economic and social burden for society. Innovative and high-quality e-mental health plays an important role in tackling this societal challenge. eMEN aims at increasing the use of e-mental health products from 7 to 15%, and at closing the implementation gap between 6 North-West Europe countries.
Tackling energy poverty
Energy retrofits of existing residential areas make an important contribution to achieving EU goals on CO2 emissions. Since 2016, the Climate Active Neighbourhoods project has been increasing the capacity of municipalities to implement their climate action strategies more effectively using a neighbourhood approach. Residents of deprived areas are empowered to take initiative and act for climate locally, mainly thanks to energy-improved households, a key factor to reduce energy poverty.
The REGIOSTARS awards will be handed over during a dedicated ceremony which will take place in the framework of the next European Week of Regions and Cities.
