Université de Bretagne Occidentale

Dr Denis de la Broise

Denis is working on the development of the microbial process for turning NRD and carbon source into microbial biomass. He is also working on the design and development of the pilot plant at Lamballe.

Denis studied for his PhD (1988) in France and Canada at INRA, UTC and IAF, working on the development of large scale production of fungus spores for the biological control of plant pests.

After two years at the Biotechnology Research Institute in Montreal, working on process development of animal cell cultures (continuous perfusion cultures for monoclonal antibody production), he returned to France in 1990. There, he worked on the development of processes and reactors for compost production applied to the mushroom industry (Solid state fermentation).

Since 1993 he has taught industrial microbiology to masters and engineering students and conducts research at the University of Western Brittany.

After a sabbatical in 2000 at Scripps Institute of Oceanography in San Diego, he started to work on the anthropic impacts on phytoplankton microorganisms (with a specific focus on pesticides), using both in situ microcosms and lab bioreactors tools.

Since 2016 he has worked on agricultural waste treatment by microbial processes.

Dr Jean-Philippe Beguel

Jean-Philippe obtained a PhD in Marine Biology at the University of Western Brittany in 2012. There, he was assessing the antioxydant capacity linked with reproduction in the Pacific oyster, developing strong skills in molecular biology and biochemistry.

He then improved these skills during a post-doc at the Louisiana State University in order to characterize genes involved in stress response and defense in the Eastern Oyster.

Back in France, he turned himself toward education by teaching medicine students. However, he soon felt a gap in his heart because he was missing research.

That’s why he came back to his first love when he heard about ALG-AD in his former lab. Jean-Philippe wanted to be a part of this innovative project, which he feels smartly combines research and industry in a sustainable development goal.

Mariana Ventura

Originally from Argentina, Mariana Ventura is currently working in France where she continues her academic career working on the ALG-AD project.

Mariana obtained her degree in Environmental Sciences in 2015 from Buenos Aires University. During her studies, she worked in the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of the Faculty of Agronomy where she started to study microalgae potential for wastewater treatment.

She then moved to France where she completed her Masters in Marine Biotechnology in 2018 at the University of Brest and she started to work for the ALG-AD project as an intern first and then as a technician.

Nowadays Mariana is doing her PhD on Marine Biotechnology under the direction of Philippe Soudant, Denis de la Broise and Fabienne Guérard and she will be working on enzymatic hydrolysis of the biomass generated on the French pilot of ALG-AD project.

Maurean Guerreiro

Maurean Guerreiro works as an Assistant Engineer and supports Luc Chauchat’s work in the ALG-AD project.

After her Bachelor Degree in Life Sciences in 2018, she graduated in 2020 with a Master Degree in “Biochemistry, molecular, cellular and applied biology” at the University of Bordeaux.

During her Master Degree, she interned at the Engineering National School of Biomolecule Technology of Bordeaux (ENSTBB)where she worked on the technical adaptation of purification kits, provided by the company CHIRAL Technologies (DAICEL).

Maurean did her end-of-studies internship at the Laboratory of Membrane Biogenesis (UMR 5200 CNRS) where she studied the impact of temperature on poly-unsaturated fatty acids in the picoalga Ostreococcus tauri (class Mamiellophyceae).

She was hired by the CNRS to participate in the technical adaptations of bioreactors on a pre-industrial scale. Her contribution involves preparation, monitoring, optimization, harvesting and presentation of the results regarding the project.
