“France Chimie Normandie” (FCN) and “Nov&atech” organized a training course on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) as part of the BioBase4SME and "Chimie Biosourcée Normandie" projects on the October 11th, in Mont Saint Aignan, France.
In total 18 participants from both sizes of business, SMEs and big companies, participated in this training.
The day started with Olivier Talon from Materia Nova, who explained the fundamentals of life cycle analysis (LCA). He has redefined the duality of life cycle, starting with on the basics and showing the participants the complexity and impact of this tool. He also emphasized the importance of commenting on the conclusions of the LCAs and urged the participants/the use to always keep in mind the assumptions that were necessary to obtain all input data.
Secondly, Stéphane Fouquay from Bostik showed us the interest of life cycle analysis for a corporate communication strategy. After this theoretical part, the participants could spend time to take control of a model of LCAs on apple sauce. This exercise made everyone aware of the difficulty of collecting data for such analysis.
Further, Chloé Sain Martin from ADEME reviewed together with the participants the evolution of the ISO 14001V2015 standard with the implementation of LCAs. And last but not least, Pierre Benassi from AD Normandie proposed an overview of the guides and tools related to the LCAs.
The day ended with an open discussion between the speakers and the participants on the difficulties of implementing Life Cycle Assessment and the specific needs of both participants groups, SMEs and big companies.
