The Care-Peat Decision Support Tool
The Care-Peat Decision Support Tool (DST) was developed in order to provide a tool to site-managers and owners to optimize the management and restoration of their sites. For that, the tool predicts the actual Greenhouse Gas (GHG) fluxes (I.e. if peatland behaves as a source/sink of carbon) but also to simulate these same fluxes in case of different restoration scenarios. This is why our developed tool is based on the estimation of GHG emissions due both to ecosystem respiration and vegetation uptake.
The tool offers two ways of calculations to the user. One option is based on a minimal number of values collected on the site (mean water table depth, mean temperature of air and mean Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density). The second option allows using the same three parameters measured annually. Then, the vegetation type must be selected along a list of seven.
By the end, the DSTool calculates the GHG fluxes including respiration fluxes, Gross Primary Production and Net Ecosystem Exchange according to different units.
