Op dit moment wordt slechts 10 procent van de zogeheten ‘critical raw materials’ die in datacenters worden gebruikt herwonnen. Willen we de impact van datacenters op het milieu en onze leefomgeving verder verminderen, dan zal het percentage apparaten en materialen dat hergebruikt of gerecycled wordt drastisch omhoog moeten. Daarom start een groep bedrijven, universiteiten en andere partijen - waaronder Green IT Amsterdam - onder de naam ‘CEDaCI’ een onderzoeksprogramma naar circulaire modellen voor datacenters. Aan het project doen organisaties mee uit de vier belangrijkste datacenterlanden van Europa: Nederland, Duitsland, Frankrijk en Verenigd Koninkrijk.

"Noord-West Europa - en dan met name de UK, Duitsland, Frankrijk en Nederland - is de datacenter-hotspot van de EU”, vertelt Julie Chenadec, project manager bij Green IT Amsterdam. “Servers en andere hardware in datacenters kennen veelal een vervangingstermijn van 1 tot 5 jaar. Dit draagt substantieel bij aan de productie van 11.8 megaton WEEE per jaar. Die vier letters staan voor ‘Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment). Daarmee is WEEE een van de snelst groeiende afvalstromen in de EuropeseUnie.”

CEDaCI: Circular Economy for the Data Centre Industry

At present, only 10 percent of the critical raw materials' used in data centres are being recovered. If we want to further reduce the impact of data centres on the environment, the percentage of devices and materials that are reused or recycled will have to be drastically increased. That is why a group of companies, universities and other parties - including Green IT Amsterdam - is launching a research project which will facilitate the implementation of circular economy for data centre industry under the name 'CEDaCI'. This project involves organisations from the four most important data centre countries in Europe: the Netherlands, Germany, France and the United Kingdom. "North West Europe - and particularly the UK, Germany, France and the Netherlands - is the EU's data centre hotspot," says Julie Chenadec, project manager at Green IT Amsterdam. "Servers and other hardware in data centres often have a Replacement term of 1 to 5 years, contributing substantially to the production of 11.8 megatons of WEEE (Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment), making WEEE one of the fastest growing waste streams in the European Union.
