During the first "Transition Tour" in Worms, energy consultant Frank-Andy Petry illustrated the important role residential buildings can play in local climate protection. Using the example of a multiple dwelling renovated in 2014, he informed a large number of citizens about how to actively reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The citizens had the chance to get to know the wide variety of energy efficiency measures available. Together with Jörn Klein (Climate Alliance) and Katharina Reinholz (climate protection manager, City of Worms) they discussed advantages and disadvantages as well as the costs these measures might entail. Naturally, the many ways of reducing energy consumption have also been discussed vividly.
The visit to this renovation project was embedded by a number of stops at local initiatives and projects on the wider subject of sustainable lifestyles. The tour, organized by Climate Alliance, the municipal goverment of Worms and committed citizens alike, will take place more often in Worms from now on (tba). Hans-Joachim Kosubek, Mayor of the City of Worms, as well as the residents present during the tour welcomed this initiative. „Transition Tours“ do not only give interested residents a detailed insight into how their city is transitioning towards more sustainable patterns, but also encourage the exchange between municipal governments and citizen initiatives.
Climate Alliance developed the concept of "Transition Tours" as part of CAN together with the project partners Worms and Essen, where more tours will take place in the future as well. The partners got inspired by the German project "STADTWANDELN" (Climate Alliance), moving the focus to energy retrofits of residential buildings.
