With great interest, partners from DGE-ROLLOUT visited the geothermal plant of partner VITO in Mol, Belgium. The Balmatt Energy Plant supplies around 1.3 MW of power to the nearby campus of the VITO research center. For this purpose, it produces hot water of around 125 degrees from a borehole more than 3 kilometers deep.
Balmatt could serve as a blueprint for other geothermal power plants in Northwest Europe that extract heat from thermal water stored in the regional deep carbonates.
