A group of researchers from GD NRW, RUB, RWTH Aachen University and Fraunhofer IEG met at the limestone quarry Hastenrath, where Carboniferous carbonates, which are expected to occur in 1.5-2.5 km depth below the Weisweiler power plant (background bottom left picture), are exposed at the surface.
Within the DGE Rollout project these rocks are a key target an examined on their regional potential for geothermal energy. Karst structures, like those shown in the top right picture, are frequently observed and are a good indication for the formation’s geothermal potential.
