Nine ways canals can fight climate change!

Canal & River Trust have set up a section on their website to highlight Nine ways canals can fight climate change.

This is of course extremely topical given the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow taking place between 31 October and 12 November 2021, and which aims to bring parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Active travel and low carbon transport
Doorstep destinations
Heating & cooling systems
Reducing urban temperatures
Water transfers
Mitigating and managing floods
Low carbon boating

The greener pumping solutions we are working on in Green WIN will have a positive impact on most of these – the key roles being to help make our water transfers less ‘carbon hungry’ and to improve our flood mitigation and management so these are effective and less impactful on the environment. The important role pumping plays in tackling drought conditions – transferring water to ‘drying’ waterways is a vital operation which will also benefit from our efforts in the project.
