GGBS - An Introduction and its Role in Construction Industry

14 April 2021 - 14 April 2021

On the 14th of April, Ecocem is hosting a CPD presentation for professional development for architects on the environmental benefits and technical merits of using GGBS (Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag) -- a cementitious material and by-product from the blast-furnaces used to make iron -- as a replacement for Ordinary Portland Cement at levels of 70%. The CPD presentation shall also detail how GGBS works and its various usages from the industry point-of-view. 3CEA, the Irish partner in our Housing 4.0 Energy (H4.0E) project,  will be joining to discuss the H4.0E project. The main goal of 3CEA's presentation at the CPD event is to promote H4.0E methods and the carbon-saving potential of GGBS cement to future potential ambassadors and users.

More specifically, the CPD will cover such topics around who Ecocem are, their background, the production cycle of GGBS, and Ecocem’s place in the European market. It will also cover GGBS uses in Ireland, environmental impacts, carbon embodiment, technical characteristics, performance, applications, and new product innovations in such areas as concrete blocks and soil stabilisation. Finally, the CPD will cover how GGBS assists in LEED, BREEAM and Life Cycle Assessments.

At the event, 3CEA will serve as one of four selected speakers. Alex Hamilton and Ralf Kampe will present 3CEA and H4.0E. The content will be “Design for Manufacture & Assembly” with the focus on using GGBS within the H4.0E pilot design and resulting carbon emission savings.
