In April 2022, VBW Bauen und Wohnen GmbH completed its first Energiesprong pilot project in Bochum's Mörikestrasse. Just two months later, the municipal housing company started their second serial retrofit.

The construction work began on 26 June in Wichernstraße 14-18. The equally innovative and experienced ecoworks GmbH was commissioned to undertake the work. In 2020, the Berlin-based provider of complete solutions implemented Germany's first Energiesprong project in Hameln and has since further improved its serial retrofit concept in several follow-up projects. The climate-neutral retrofit of the 1,407 m2 multi-family house complex should be completed this year, meaning that the tenants will be free from exorbitantly rising gas prices by as early as next year.
The old gas central heating has been replaced by a modern air heat pump. It supplies the 18 tenants with heat and hot water. The photovoltaic modules on the roof generate as much renewable electricity over the year as the heat pump needs to operate, plus the required household electricity for the residents. The highly insulated, prefabricated façade and roof modules, along with the new windows, ensure that the energy requirement is as low as possible. After the renovation, the buildings will save around 54 tonnes of CO2 per year. A future of climate-neutral living will then begin for the tenants.
