Marine-i/OPIN webinar: Hydrogen the route to Net-Zero

Online - 10AM to 12PM GMT / 11AM to 1PM CET

4 March 2021

We are pleased to invite you to a webinar on Thursday 4th March 2021, from 10:00 to 12:00, focussed on hydrogen production and storage.

Marine-i will be hosting this Discovery Room on ZOOM, facilitated by Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult in collaboration with OPIN.

About Marine-I

Marine-I is an ambitious programme designed to enable innovation in the marine technology sector in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. The sector has been identified as an area of high growth potential for the region. The project is part funded by the European Regional Development Fund.

It is focussed on four interconnected themes: marine energy, marine manufacturing, maritime operations and marine environmental technologies. The Marine-i partners work together to stimulate and support research, development and innovation (RD&I) to help businesses exploit new market opportunities.

ORE Catapult 2020 report “Solving the Hydrogen Integration Challenge” estimates a cumulative GVA of £320billion between now and 2050. This global market for equipment and hydrogen includes £250billion of electrolyser exports. A further potential £48billion from green hydrogen exports to Europe, would need an additional 240GW of Offshore Wind.

Speakers will present the strategy for the UK’s Hydrogen Roadmap, discuss some of the leading projects demonstrating generation, distribution and storage. University of Exeter will discuss their research into electrolysers and energy storage. The purpose is to provide an overview of the latest thinking and providing the opportunity for SMEs to get involved and understand where there are market gaps and opportunities.

10:00 to 10:10    Welcome & Introduction:  Simon Cheeseman (ORE Catapult/Marine-i/OPIN)

Simon will Chair the event kickstarting by introducing the Marine-i project and the Ocean Power Innovation Network collaborative project.

10:10 to 10:30    UK Hydrogen Roadmap: Kacper Stefaniak (ORE Catapult, Strategy)

Kacper is the ORE Catapult’s Head of Hydrogen Strategy and co-authored the ORE Catapults Hydrogen Integration Report. He will discuss the report findings and outline the UK’s Hydrogen Roadmap.

10:30 to 10:50    Energy Kingdom: Michelle Hitches (ORE Catapult MEECE)

Michelle is the project manager for the Energy Kingdom project in Pembroke. The project is building hydrogen-ready features and technologies including fuel cell RASA cars; hybrid heat pumps and hydrogen-ready boilers for heating.

10:50 to 11:10    European Marine Energy Centre Hydrogen Projects: Rob Flynn (EMEC)

Rob is Commercial Manager at the European Marine Energy Centre, Orkney. He will describe how the island is producing green hydrogen from renewable energy to power the islands transport network.

11:10 to 11:30    Tidal Hydrogen Production Storage and Offtake (THyPSO): Bevan Wray (Inyanga Marine Projects)

Bevan will talk about an integrated hydrogen production unit that produces hydrogen from tidal energy.

11:30 to 11:50    Electrolysers and Energy Storage: Prof Xiaohong Li Professor of Energy Storage and Mi Tian Lecturer in Low Carbon Engineering (University of Exeter)

Professor Xiaohong Li and Lecturer Mi Tian will talk about the leading-edge research being carried out by University at the Penryn campus on electrolysers and energy storage.

11:50 to 12:00    Questions & Answers: Simon Cheeseman

Simon will direct questions from the delegates to the presenters.
