Update: in early December 2019, customers of the Octopus Agile tariff have been enjoying negative pricing at night.
This has been due to an excess of wind power on the grid, and the negative unit prices have incentivised customers to use more energy at night, which is essentially customers getting paid to perform grid balancing duties. An ideal electricity use for this purpose is electrical heating, including storage heating which can release heat in the morning and throughout the day, as well as charging domestic batteries or electric cars.
The RED WoLF system will be able to take advantage of negative pricing to actually reduce customers’ bills, rather than just keeping them as low as possible.
