STEPS Roundtable of Experts, Session 1: Market Readiness

Online

22 October 2021

This roundtable’s main aim was to obtain a deeper understanding of the market readiness and the enabling conditions across NWE and the EU for medium-scale energy storage. Together with our 37 attendees, we explored questions including:

Market

What are current incentives for battery recycling? For example: revenu streams for raw materials, following of laws, satisfying environmentally minded clients, …?

How is the current state of recycling and repurposing? are there any co2 emission during this process?

Policy

What are the responsibilities of the different parties (producer, user, government, …) with respect to the recycling of battery energy storage?

Technical

Is it expected that batteries (also currently existing technologies) will be significantly better recyclable in the future?

Do you think second-life usage will be better handled by the producer (car manufacturer) or is it possible to build a viable ecosystem with third parties for this, despite the broad variety of modules and BMS systems?

What capacities will be needed in the future to process the huge amount of batteries that will be recycled in the coming years?

Research

Is the degree of recycability a factor that is being taken into account in the development of current technologies? Examples?
