RAWFILL was presented at AquaConSoil 2019

15th International Conference on Sustainable Use and Management of Soil, Sediment and Water Resources took place from 20–24 May 2019 in Antwerp, Belgium.

During the session ‘Circular land use and brownfield regeneration’ (23rd May) our partner Eddy Wille presented the RAWFILL-project. The subject of his presentation was ‘Innovative characterisation of landfills and smart decision-making as part of the circular economy’.

The shift from a linear to a circular economy is one of the main policies in the EU. Many initiatives focus on resource efficiency, realised by a transition from waste management to sustainable material management. Urban mining is becoming an important supply of resources in the 21st century. This approach diverts our attention from the remnants of the linear economy: former landfills.

RAWFILL develops an evidence-based, cost-effective enhanced landfill inventory framework (ELIF), an innovative LF characterization by geophysical imaging and guided sampling, and a two-step Decision Support Tool (DST) to allow smart LFM project planning, prioritisation and interim use.

During this session, the necessity of broad data collection was emphasised in order to redesign the traditional risk-based landfill management into a dynamic resource supplying system. The inventory will be explained in relation to a comprehensive Conceptual Site Model taking into account cross-cutting policies such as Sustainable Development Goals, Climate change and Land management.

The first step in the planning process will be demonstrated by a straight forward easy to use decision support tool (DST 1- Cedalion). The objective of Cedalion is a quick scan of the landfill site potential and delivering guidance to the next steps to take. Given the expected low success rate of exploration and the long duration between the exploration phase and the effective mining, an interim use phase will follow. An overview of those usages will be given. The DST 2 – Orion is a more dynamic and complex model integrating the landfill in its physical, economic and social environment, including safety aspects of the operations.
