From October 22-24, 2018 the World Conference of the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA) was held in Kuala Lumpur. The ISWA Congress annually attracts researchers, scientists, young professionals, and policy makers from around the world to network and exchange scientific and technical data policies and case studies on a wide range of solid waste management issues. The Congress offers a critical platform to bring about positive action and cutting-edge innovation toward sustainable solid waste management with a think global, act local approach. This three-day event attracted moreover 1,200 delegates from across the globe.
Our partner Eddy Wille from OVAM participated at the session Climate change and Landfills. His presentation ‘Flooding Risks at Old Landfill Sites. Linear Economy Meets Climate Change’ focused on the challenges of the traditional containment strategies and the changing environment around the former landfills. He emphasised the importance of data collection at landfills sites in order to take the right decisions. These aspects are covered by the Interreg NWE-project RAWFILL and an overview was given during this session. By using these DSTs, long term landfill management plans could be developed also providing interim use at landfills sites which require no remedial actions or redevelopment/mining activities in the short time. This approach also fits in the new vision of Dynamic Landfill Management.
