The Interreg North-West Europe project Housing 4.0 Energy (H4.0E) aimed to develop a market for small, affordable near-zero energy homes (NZEH) by adapting and applying new digital technologies. Between 2018 and 2023, eight partners from five different countries in North-West Europe explored and discussed new technologies and materials, the needs of potential users and framework conditions. Together, they built 42 pilot units in The Netherlands, Belgium, Ireland and Germany and monitored energy use and the amount of embodied carbon. All pilots fed data into the H4.0E platform, the core of the H4.0E building technology which is now, together with trainings, a guidebook and an implementation plan, enabling affordable zero energy/emission housing building on a larger scale.
