STRAW: premium biobased building material
Creating a healthy and comfortable inner climate in buildings and reducing CO2 can go hand-in-hand! Building with straw, in combination with clay, has this effect.
CO2 reduction takes place by optimal insulation and by the CO2 contained in the natural material straw itself. The use of straw and clay creates a healhy, dampopen inner climate.
Straw is widely available and can be applied in new constructions (houses, offices, schools, public buildings). Straw is also applicable for the insulation of existing buildings. Straw can be used immediately from the production location (farmland), without a further processing.
This makes straw the premium biobased building material.
UP STRAW: a collaborative approach to creating straw awareness and use
Heating all of the buildings in NWE accounts for about 15% of the GHG emissions. The implementatie/application of straw as building insulation helps to reduce that in a natural way.
We will demonstratie that in five projects: buildings made of bales, wrapped in straw and created with prefab straw panels. Ready for implementation in the building industry.
Educational programs for architects, constructors and straw craftsman will facilitate knowledge development. University modulair program elements make students aware of the possibilities and application conditions.
Implementation of straw elements in building methodology and Building Information Modelling software will facilitate the use of straw elements in the building industry.
Communicating the advantages, application and the effects of building with straw will create interest in the possibilities and application.

As part of the project to renovate the Roomley sports hall, a report was drawn up to present the results of the building's energy performance. Result energy performance By using circular materials and improved integrated energy concepts, the building could be disconnected from the gas distribution network. The building largely generates its own energy through PV panels and is heated and cooled by means of a so-called heat pump installation. This more sustainable generation is possible because the use of straw as an insulation material has made an essential contribution to improving the complete insulation value of the building. This can be explained by the use of PV panels, the reuse of materials and the application of biobased materials. It also concerns renovation, which means that the profit on the first strategy is much greater than with new construction. The use of biobased building materials results in a much better score on the themes of environment, energy and especially health. By consciously choosing bio-based applications, we get healthier buildings and healthier products. Read More

A successful opening!
On 13 November we officially inaugurated the CNCP's new training centre in the presence of our European partners and financial backers Interreg NWE and the Centre-Val de Loire Region.
Nearly 80 people joined us to celebrate this new facility, which has a bright future ahead of it:
a tool for delivering professional training, awareness-raising and educational engineering strategies for the entire region.

The CD2E and FIBOIS Hauts-de-France organised the eighth edition of the Regional Meetings dedicated to wood and straw construction.

The realization of the new CNCP eco-construction training centre was in the spotlight with the presentation of the project by Patrick Thomas, associate architect at VIVARCHI (project manager).
How does the training centre construction project enhance the existing heritage (4 buildings are listed as historical monuments) by constructing a new building and also rehabilitating existing buildings?
In accordance with the UP STRAW project, Interreg ENO programme, the CNCP has favoured bio-sourced materials: wood prefabrication and straw insulation (80 m3 of straw) as well as local companies.
More than 200 people attended this event with many sectors of activity represented: companies, local authorities, architects and farmers.

The grand opening of the Bale House Visitor Center will take place on Saturday, June 4
A day of events is planned from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the opening ceremony taking place at 12:30 p.m.
The 'Bale House' is the new Visitor Centre in Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve.
It is the first public straw bale building in Hastings and will act as a community facility and café with interpretation that showcases the management of Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve.
From the foundations to facade, it is constructed from natural and recycled materials which are healthy, fireproof, breathable, and they lock up carbon from the atmosphere, recycling agricultural by-products. It requires next to no energy to run and due to the level of insulation will require no additional heating to keep people comfortable.
This sustainable and exemplary building was designed by Cave Cooperative architects and built by a consortium of straw building specialists led by Huff and Puff Construction and Green & Castle.

Opening ceremony of the largest straw-insulated building, "Haus St. Wunibald", in the Benedictine Abbey of Plankstetten, on 1 April 2022.
This is the celebration of a milestone in ecological building in Germany.
It was very festive and high representatives from church, politics and society were present for this event.
Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, praised straw building as a unique answer to the climate crisis!
He listed the main advantages of straw construction and mentioned the fact that in Germany, more than 20% of straw remains unused in agriculture every year.
This would be enough to insulate more than 350,000 family houses.
The fact that a German Prime Minister is now talking about straw building is a milestone in the history of this ecologically remarkable and market-ready building method.

On 7 December, the most important results of the UP STRAW project were presented in the Centre-Val de Loire Region.
We were very happy to celebrate four years of intense collaboration between Germany, England, Belgium, the Netherlands and France.
About forty people were able to participate in this event.

The CEC has inaugurated its new exemplary building realised in the project UP STRAW.
This new building of 400 m2 is the demonstrator of innovative techniques: half logs and straw, 3D prefabrication and without foundations.
The architectural firm Hélium 3 and the contractor Mobic offered us a guided tour of the site.
The walls of the building are made of raw wood for its internal and external faces with the use of machined spruce half-logs, and compressed straw for the insulation (121 m3).
This building is the first tertiary building of this size in Belgium to benefit from 3D prefabrication.
Finally, the installation of the building on screwed steel piles allowed a construction without concrete, preserving the ground and its permeability, and the possibility of a deconstruction without impact on the grounds.
An audience of around 200 professional and institutional guests attended the opening ceremony.
