The Cluster Eco-construction started the UP STRAW training program for students in Belgium.
In May and June 2018 we taught about 60 students (architects and carpenters). The objectives of this 3-hour training were to raise the awareness of building with straw bales, to focus on technical principles and point out the benefits and limits of straw construction.
The first chapter focuses on staw as a material for building : its physical characteristics, thermal & acoustic performance, fire resistance, air quality, humidity transfer and Life Cycle Analysis.
The second chapter presented building using straw bales : construction principles, regulatory context and examples of a few buildings using straw bales and their costs.
