Cooperation at its best: Interreg NWE showcases its hydrogen projects at EUSEW

Interreg NWE co-organised the session "Boosting the hydrogen economy through international cooperation" on 25th June.

The EU Sustainable Energy Week (EUSEW) 2020 edition was held fully online on the week of 22nd June. As part of the official programme,  the Interreg NWE Programme co-organised the session "Boosting the hydrogen economy through international cooperation" on 25th June, which showcased some of its successful projects in the field of hydrogen.

A total of 352 participants joined the session and followed project partners from GenComm, H2SHARE, FCCP, and HECTOR. They presented the outstanding impact already delivered by these initiatives and together with international partners from the Canadian province of Quebec they discussed hydrogen technology can enable smart integration from different energy sectors.

The presentations clearly showed that cooperation provides a strong value to the hydrogen sector and outlined some key challenges to be addressed in order to further develop the industry in Europe, particularly in a period of post-COVID and economic recovery. For instance, establishing a solid H2 network throughout the full value chain was considered strategic for the industry. The speakers also presented the importance of prioritising green H2 through renewable energy generation in order to reduce the CO2 footprint and empower communities.

EU funds were pictured as a key enabler for the sector, which delivers tangible impact (with the support of local regional policies) on the ground. In this respect, Interreg programmes are a valuable partner to the industry in the pathway to the decarbonisation of the European energy sector.
