Large scale energy and heat production in NWE: RWE Power AG is a company of the RWE Group. Nowadays its business is lignite-based and nuclear power generation. The Company employs about 10,300 people and operates three opencast lignite mines in the Rhineland area. Lignite production is predominantly used for electricity generation in the Company’s own power stations, but is also processed to make solid fuels and filter materials. The Weisweiler power plant site will become a real laboratory for geothermal energy research: in 2020, an exploratory borehole up to 2,000 metres deep is to be drilled in front of the power plant. Preparatory work for the Interreg "Roll out DGE NWE" project began in 2019. Weisweiler is one of the four pilot sites.
