The last meeting of the Care-Peat project took place on February 4th and 5th 2020 in Deurne, the Netherlands, with the support of Province of North Brabant. After a productive project meeting, in which the progress and future activities of the project were discussed, the Care-Peat partners also welcomed external participants for the public part of the workshop which would cover the afternoon of February 4th and the morning of February 5th. The main objective within Care-Peat is to demonstrate and quantify CO2 emissions and carbon storage and to propose restoration scenarios and solutions for the reduction of CO2 emissions from peatlands, using advanced management tools developed from pilot sites. As input data, these management numerical tools of peatlands use some characteristics of the sites. This report lists the main data available on each site at the beginning of the project. Some sites own long series of data with acquisitions starting since 2014 (e.g. La Guette site), whereas collection is just starting on other sites (e.g. Cloncrow site or Little Woolden Moss site). For this reason, numerical models used for determining carbon fluxes will be first developed on the sites the most documented. The methodology developed on these sites will be useful for other sites. During the first phase of the Care-Peat project, the partners jointly planned the restoration of their pilots. The work, led by Dr. Chris Field and Prof. Simon Caporn from UK partner Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) was completed during the summer and autumn of 2019. Overall, the site survey data collected during summer 2019 supported the main intended restoration plans at each site and highlighted the suitability of the sites to reach their desired states over time following proposed management interventions. On September 3th 2019, our request to travel outside the North-West Europe region was granted for the purposes of attending a Conference ‘WETSCAPES’ on peatland restoration in Rostock Germany from the 10th – 13th of September 2019. Care-Peat held its second meeting in Dublin on September 27th and 28th 2019. Following a productive project meeting at the impressive DCU Talent Garden building, Care-Peat welcomed a public meeting in the afternoon of September 27th at the DCU Alpha Building. On Friday September 28th, the participants travelled to two pilots sites: Cloncrow and Cavemount bogs where we met representatives from Bord na Mona, the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the ETHOS local community group. We were happy to meet you there and to have discussions about the Care-Peat project, the use of new technologies for monitoring peatlands and future restoration opportunities. Read More
