Project Summary

The Ocean Power Innovation Network (OPIN) is a 4-year initiative that was running from 2019 to 2022. The project had a total project budget of €2.4M, with €1.4M in financial support contributed by Interreg North West Europe from the European Research and Development Fund (ERDF).

The OPIN project delivered supports to encourage both cross-sectoral and cross-regional collaboration. These supports included:

Annual Symposiums: providing networking opportunities for members
Workshops and Masterclasses: to facilitate knowledge transfer
Technology Assessment Processes (TAPs): to allow companies to assess their technologies and identify potential collaborators
Collaborative Innovation Groups (CIGs): to encourage SMEs to work together to solve problems in common

In less than 4 years, the network has attracted more than 500 members from 35 countries from all over the world. OPIN organised close to 40 events; over 1500 people attended OPIN workshops, webinars & 3 symposiums, which provided them with latest insights into technology and developments in the offshore renewable energy sector.

Technology Assessment Process (TAP) Support

The Technology Assessment Process (TAP) was designed to support both the developers in the ocean sector looking to develop their technology, and the developers in other sectors looking for opportunities to transfer technology into ocean energy. It offered an analysis of the development & support needs of SMEs, in which OPIN partners discussed design principles, opportunities to de-risk onward development and the route to commercialisation (product to market) with the technology developer. During the project, OPIN received a total of 49 TAP applications from 9 different countries. Following the completion of their TAP, 80% of recipients went on to test/develop their technology further, 60% increased their TRL and 40% released new products to the market.

Collaborative Innovation Group (CIG) Support

OPIN offered support to SMEs through the Collaborative Innovation Groups (CIGs). A Collaborative Innovation Group (CIG) is a small group of SMEs, often working with research entities and / or large companies, to solve specific problems which are barriers to deployment of ocean energy and offer opportunities for new products, services or markets. CIGs should focus on challenges which cannot or have not been solved by one SME alone and aim to include complementary skills and expertise. The work carried out by a CIG is defined as a Collaborative Innovation Project (CIP). Collaborative Innovation Group facilitated through OPIN are described below:

CIG Corrosion in reinforced concrete structures used for offshore renewables

This particular CIG has been set up to explore opportunities (alternative rebar materials, specific concrete formulations, etc.) to reduce the cost of corrosion and increase the lifetime of reinforced concrete structures in offshore renewables applications. 12 organisations (including 4 SMEs) from France, Belgium, Denmark and USA, led by OPIN partner WEAMEC, participated in this CIG. They have published a state state-of-the-art report that compiles knowledge, information and ideas shared amongst the CIG members. The report aims at identifying future R&D paths to reduce corrosion degradation while optimizing socio-economic and environmental impacts, by comparing alternative reinforced concrete solutions for offshore renewables. Marine & space technology CIG

In summer 2020, The European Space Agency and Dutch Marine Energy Centre teamed up to develop a framework through which space companies and marine energy developers will work together on the commercial and technical development of innovative space-based solutions addressing the marine energy sector. By using the OPIN CIG mechanism companies were facilitated in working together to apply for the Marine Energy Tender, which rolled out in September 2020 . As a result, 3 OPIN members were selected to work on feasibility studies that involve an utilisation of space technology and data. These studies will help them progress their technology and will serve as a roadmap for demonstration & implementation of their services.

CIG Corrosion Monitoring

This CIG addressed the topic of Corrosion Monitoring of steel structures for Offshore Renewable Energy generation. It was led by OPIN partner Sirris that gathered the consortium of 10 companies and research institutes that exchanged their knowledge and experience on the subject, performed a literature study and an online survey with the involved value chain. As a result, the CIG report was published that gives an overview of the needs & expectations from the sector and which also identified potential opportunities for further R&D into this topic. Floating solar CIG

HelioRec is an early-stage technology SME that is developing wind and wave resistant floating solar technology. The company engaged in the CIG process with a design for a floating solar platform and associated infrastructure which they wished to be evaluated prior to this deployment. Within this CIG, Heliorec worked together with industry experts to evaluate specific aspects of their design and ensure the best possible outcome for the pilot deployment. A forward look at pathways towards commercialisation, specifically through the TPV process, will also benefit HelioRec in the longer term. In January 2022, HelioRec installed a floating solar power plant in the Port of Oostende in Belgium as part of the EU-funded DUAL Ports initiative. During the initial phase of the project, the 10kWp floating solar power plant will provide electricity to a warehouse in the Port Oostende where an old boat is being restored. This is expected to minimize the use of the existing diesel generator and consequently 924 kgCO2eq. per year will be reduced, according to project partners.

Pre-commercial funding CIG

This CIG brought together offshore renewable energy stakeholders who need guidance and support early in their TRL journey and professionals who know where appropriate funding mechanisms can be found, how they apply to projects/technologies and have a successful track record in securing those funds on behalf of renewable technology developers at a similar stage of development as those targeted in this CIG. During this workshop delegates gained knowledge about tools in financial modelling for early-stage marine energy developers, private finance and investment in early-stage marine energy development, and Lessons learned and the pathway forward in financing marine energy projects. The CIG workshop was held on 24 May 2022 and attracted interest from 38 organisations from offshore renewable sector.

Documents

During the OPIN project a number of tools for supporting ocean energy SMEs and other network members will be developed. These will include value chain reports, a process document for technology assessments, a log of all CIG support categories (Innovation Challenges), the content of workshops and masterclasses, presentations and work from Annual Symposiums and CIG summaries. These will be documented and made available for future use through this Documents section.
